Facebook Dangers for Teens

Once introduced to the public, the social networking site Facebook instantly ensnare the hearts of millions of fans. Social media is loved because it allows a person to reconnect with old friends from high school or college without having to meet face to face.

But the intense use of Facebook has consequences, especially for adolescents. Larry Rosen, a psychologist at Cal State Dominguez Hills, who has studied the impact of technology on humans for over 25 years reveals the social networking site like this is bad for children and adolescents.

He expressed his findings in the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association. According to him, adolescents who frequently use technology such as video games or the Internet, tend to complain of abdominal pain, sleep disturbance, anxiety and depression. They also reported frequently skipping school.

In addition adolescents and young adults who frequently log in to Facebook more narcissistic. "Social networking sites make someone more narcissistic because it can advertise itself 24 hours 7 days a week according to personal wishes," said Rosen.

Among users of all ages, Rosen assess more people using Facebook, the more likely they are to have antisocial personality disorder, paranoia, anxiety and alcohol use.

When Rosen and on crutches watching junior high students, high school and college students who are studying for exams for 15 minutes, they found that most students can only focus for two to three minutes before turning their attention to things that are less scientific, such as text messaging or features social media on mobile phones. Not surprisingly, students who intermittently checking account up while learning to get bad results in the exam.

Parents must also deal with other forms of social networking, such as send and receive text messages (SMS). Teenagers on average sends more than 2,000 texts per month. This is a huge amount not only triggers the problem of sleep and concentration, but also physical stress.

Rosen shows an example of a teenager in Chicago who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and require pain medication and bandages on her wrists after sending more than 100 texts per day.

"Children raised on the concept of connection. For those not quality that matters, but the relationship itself. Phone or meet face to face only allow the minimum number of connections, while other tools enabling them to connect to the world," said Rosen.

Although Facebook also has many positive sides, but Rosen suggested that parents should give their children an understanding about how to behave online. This could encourage children to be aware of what is allowed and prohibited when using the internet.

He added, social media, if used properly can help children behave empathy and interact with friends without having to worry about the reaction of people directly. "For shy children will be the added value and help them out of his shell," he said.

But there is one important thing that parents are often forgotten, that Facebook is actually aimed at adults, not children. "In contrast to bullying at school, bullying is happening on the internet can occur at any time," he said.
