Indonesia's on-year inflation is expected to edge higher in March due to a low base of comparison, though on a monthly basis the country will likely report deflation. The official statistics agency will release the data Friday around 0400 GMT.
The median forecast of 12 regional economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires is for the consumer price index to rise 6.94% on year in March, accelerating slightly from the 6.84% increase in February.
The median forecast of eight economists who gave on-month comparisons is for the consumer price index to fall 0.07% in March, compared with an increase of 0.13% a month earlier.
“Our price observation suggested that rice and chili prices are continuing to decline this month,“ said Mandiri Sekuritas economist Aldian Taloputra. Taloputra added that rice harvest and importation of the staple food have helped bring the price down from a month earlier.
The on-month fall in the index could encourage the Bank Indonesia to keep its policy overnight rate at 6.75% when it meets April 12.
